Abstract: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the psychometric characteristics (i.e., the validity and the reliability) of the Short Inventory on Stress and Well-being (S-ISW), in particular the part of the S-ISW that measures well-being. The S-ISW is developed by ISW Limits in both Dutch and French and measures the following well-being indicators: strain, motivation and negative acts at work, which can be considered as possible outcome variables or employees’ reactions to the perceived work situation. Four samples (N1 = 17,781; N2 = 462; N3 = 264; N4 = 3596) were used to perform analyses, with longitudinal data available for Sample 2 and 3. The results supported the three-factor structure of the S-ISW (factor validity) and the invariance of this factor structure between the Dutch and the French S-ISW. Furthermore, we established the content similarity of strain and motivation with negative stress and positive stress, respectively, supporting the construct validity of the S-ISW. The predictive validity of the well-being indicators was established using measures of absenteeism and doctor consultations. Finally, the S-ISW was reliable, as the indicators of well-being showed high test-retest reliability and adequate internal consistency. The part of the S-ISW that measures well-being is thus both valid and reliable, and may be a helpful instrument in conducting research to aid organizations in the development of their well-being policy.

Abstract: The cross-cultural research abound in instruments used to measure individualism and collectivism (27 scales measures various forms of individualism and/or collectivism; Oyserman et al., 2002). The present article takes a closer look at two of the most widely used measures in this literature (Singelis, Triandis, Bhawuk, and Gelfand, 1995; Triandis and Gelfand, 1998) and hilights their psychometrical strenghs and limitaions (reliability, validiy, and measurment equivalence). The article aims to increase awerenss regarding the psychometric properties of the measures reseahers use in cross-cultural setting as no measure is infallible.

Abstract: Psoriasis is a chronic disease which affects approximately 2% of the world’s population. Psoriasis covers a wide range of conditions, one of the features of the disease being its unpredictability, with remission and return alternating. In addition to this, mention is made of the visibility of the disease, the chronic nature of the disease and the risk of complications. Thus, psoriasis is a multifaceted immune-inflammatory disease which affects the patient’s quality of life at a physical, psychological, social, sexual and occupational level. In this paper we present an overview concerning the psychological approach in cases of patients suffering from psoriasis.

Mindu, G.K. (2011). Relatia dintre functionarea familiei si aptitudinea copilului de a decoda mesaje non-verbale [The relationship between family functioning and child’s ability to decode nonverbal messages]. Romanian Journal of Applied Psychology, 13 (1), 29-36.more details. Download PDF
Abstract: This paper’s purpose is to evaluate the relationship between family functioning and the child's ability to decode nonverbal messages as well as with the perceived intimacy among the family members. In addition, the existence of a significant correlation between the child's perspective on the family functioning and the development of the child’s social skills was tested. For these purposes 90 people were evaluated (30 families, each consisting of mother, father and child), using the Family Assessment Device, Social Skills Inventory, Intimacy Scale and Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity. The results suggest that family members have similar perspectives on the family functioning, agreeing that each of the members is aware of his responsibilities within the family and respects them, to other members’ emotional comfort. Moreover, the child’s abilities to understand and receive nonverbal messages do not depend on the level of intimacy in the relationship with the parents, nor on the overall family functioning.

Piccoli, B., De Witte, H., & Pasini, M. (2011). Job insecurity and organizational consequences: How justice moderates this relationship. Romanian Journal of Applied Psychology, 13 (2), 37-49.more details. Download PDF
Abstract: The experience of job insecurity has been related to several organizational outcomes, both immediate and long-term. However, since the strength of these effects have been found to vary across studies, it is essential to identify factors that could influence the relationships. The current study examines interaction effects between job insecurity and organizational justice (distributive, procedural and interactional) for various organizational consequences (affective organizational commitment, citizenship behaviours and perceived performance), some of which have received little research attention. Data from 248 blue collar workers in the Italian organizational context showed the buffer effects of procedural and interactional justice on affective organizational commitment and citizenship behaviours. However, contrary to expectations, the results also indicated that high organizational justice exacerbated the negative impact of job insecurity on perceived performance. Implications for research on job insecurity and the moderating role of organizational justice are discussed.

Satisfactia fata de viata si spiritualitatea: implicatii pentru starea psihologica de bine [Life satisfaction and spirituality: implications for the individual psychological well-being]. Romanian Journal of Applied Psychology, 13 (2), 50-55.more details. Download PDF
Abstract: The curent study sought to identify the role that personality factors, life satisfaction and spirituality have in explaining the psychological well-being. The non-experimental research was performed on a sample of 88 participants, aged between 19 and 55 years, using The D.E.C.A.S. Personality Inventory (Sava, 2008), The Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener, 1985), The Psychological Well-Being Scale (Ryff, 1989) and The Spiritual Assessment Inventory (Hall & Edwards, 2002). The results indicate that personality, life satisfaction and spirituality explain an important variance of individual’s psychological well-being.

Maricutoiu, L.P. (2011). Measurement of implicit associations between emotional states and computer errors using the implicit association test. Romanian Journal of Applied Psychology, 13 (2), 56-63.more details. Download PDF
Abstract: Previous research identified two main emotional outcomes of computer error: anxiety and frustration. These emotions have been associated with low levels of performance in using a computer. The present research used innovative methodology for studying the relations between computer error messages, user anxiety and user frustration. We used the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to measure automated associations between error messages and these two emotional outcomes. A sample of 80 participants completed two questionnaires and two IAT designs. Results indicated that user error messages are more strongly associated with anxiety, than with frustration. Personal characteristics such as emotional stability and English proficiency were significantly associated with the implicit anxiety measure, but not with the frustration measure. No significant relations were found between two measures of computer experience and the emotional measures. These results indicated that error related anxiety is associated with personal characteristics.

Erdei, I. (2011). Socializarea lingvistica in familii bilingve [Linguistic socialization in bi-lingual families]. Romanian Journal of Applied Psychology, 13 (2), 64-69.more details. Download PDF
Abstract: The goal of the research is the analysis of the linguistic socialization of children from bilingual families, the outlining of some specific socialization models. The model used is the structured interview. The sample is formed of 40 mixed families from Timişoara, which have at least one preschooler going to a Hungarian kindergarden. The results revealed three linguistic socialization models specific to bilingual families: the linguistic socialization model, which produces simultaneous bilingualism – specific to families in which the children learn the languages in the same time according to the principle one person – one language; the linguistic socialization model, which produces primary successive bilingualism – specific to families in which the children learn the languages successively in the family; and the socialization model, which produces secondary successive bilingualism – specific to families in which children learn the languages successively: the first language within the family and the second language in an institution before reaching the school age.

Abstract: In the present study, based on a sample of teachers (N = 70) from several educational institutions in Romania, the author examined the relationship among organizational justice, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The results suggest that the general job satisfaction of teachers is linked with their perceptions of procedural (r = .27), and distributive justice (r = .38). Moreover, significant correlations were found between the perception of organizational justice and two dimensions of organizational commitment. Several relations, such as distributive justice-affective commitment (r = .48), procedural justice-affective commitment (r = .48), interactional justice-affective commitment (r = .47), and interactional justice-continuance commitment (r = .27), present an interesting perspective.
